Northern Patagonia: Bariloche & The Argentine Lake District
Dubbed the Argentine Lake District, Argentina’s slice of Northern Patagonia is famous for exactly that, its lakes. The most coveted of the lakeside cities are Bariloche, Villa la Angostura, and San Martin de Los Andes. But the forested mountains and dramatic landscapes aren’t all the same.
Bariloche brings a relaxed atmosphere including golf, hiking, boating, kayaking, and picnic lunches. Villa la Angostura is similar but much more off the beaten path considering it’s harder to get to. Now, San Martin de Los Andes is where specialized activities like fishing and riding peak. But either way, the cities of Northern Patagonian are any outdoor enthusiast’s dream.
Well connected via the esteemed Ruta 40, the Argentine Lake District is prime for a road trip. As you traverse the lush green vistas of the Seven Lakes Road you can even hop over into Chile. But don’t worry if you don’t want to drive. You can bike around, helicopter around, or simply sit back with a driver and guide leading the way.
